Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - Hold Tight!

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich

Sultry saturday night, ladies and gentlemen!  Sorry for the brief delay this evening, I was thoroughly wrapped up in a heated game of Liverpool Rummy; one in which I lost.  Anyhow, due to the high number of 50’s-60’s requests, I thought this particular selection to be absolutely appropriate.

I first feasted my ears on this little baby in the Tarantino GrindHouse flick “Death Proof”.  An A+ badass-girls-get-revenge-in-a-throwback-car-chase movie.  Brutal scene made cool by this little known band with a cool cool jam. SEE IT HERE!

Upon further review, I discovered Hold Tight! was originally released on their 1966 album If Music Be The Food Of Love… Prepare For Indigestion.  BRILLIANT.

If you’re not having a fun filled weekend, let this song be the soundtrack to turn it around.  Or let it be the song to make you thank yourself for staying in tonight…

Either way, enjoy.

DISCUSS!

Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

I’m falling asleep, so I have to make this snappy!

I’ve taken my talents (and my fam) to South Beach for the weekend to attend my wonderful aunt’s wedding.  I got back to my hotel from the reception about an hour ago, desperately needing to “take a load off” and lie down.  That’s when I found the perfect song to stir my sleep-stew; brought to you by the fines folks in Grizzly Bear.  I have my iTunes set to single song repeat as we speak, and it might be TOO perfect for the current climate of my night…  I just nodded off and was consequently floating on my back on a nebulous cloud, shrouded in serenity.  Best five seconds of sleep I’ve had all year…

I’m also nursing some injuries.  I didn’t drink tonight, butI did enough of that last night to not come away unscathed.  I was chasing someone ‘round the streets of Miami with dress shoes on and had a HUGE face plant.  My kisser was fine, just a cheek bone bruise, but my kneecap got blasted and I’m pretty sure I cracked a rib.  Such is life when you make poor choices like drinking the orange slushy with anonymous well liquors in it that you bought at a bar in a mall, or running on the freshly buffed sidewalk with un-street-broken dress shoes on when you suck at running to begin with (see Big Mess video for proof).

So anyways, I decided to take the high road tonight and turn in early.  This song is my re-boot button.  ”Bad Boys” was on earlier and for about 2.56 seconds I considered posting THIS.  I’m glad I didn’t take 3 seconds.

Give yourself a dreamy dose and give a listen or five.

Let me know how you feel afterwards and as always….

DISCUSS.

Time for this little doggie to doze.

——————————

I ended up choosing something more current this week.  Maybe next week I’ll reach back into the 50’s-60’s.  We’ll see!  G’night western world.  G’morning to other side.

The Animal Upstairs - Run For Your Life (demo)

THE ANIMAL UPSTAIRS

As if it weren’t common knowledge, Andy is focusing full-time on a new music project. I thought I’d introduce two of my favorite things (this new song of his + YOU GUYS AND GALS).

Andy and I have always had a special musical connection, usually being affected and moved by the same little things. A subtle melodic dip, a scene-setting metaphor, an emotive chorus harmony, left of center kick drum patterns…  Hearing this song brought all those things I love about his taste out of the kitchen cabinets and into the oven.

Enchanting melody all around, complimented with a beautiful chorus harmony that flaunts the beauty of desperate departure.  A lovely song from a lovely gentleman (and a lovely lady). CHECK OUT THE REST HERE.

Slap on some headphones, turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and give this the listen you both deserve.

DISCUSS!

If you could make me choose a song for next week’s SNMC from ANY DECADE, 50’s to 2010’s, which would it be?

Magnetic Fields - Yeah! Oh, Yeah!

69 Love Songs

Every so often, and always when you least expect it, back turned, ears, eyes and mind engaged in something else altogether, a song can sneak up behind you and knock you clean into unconsciousness.  Next thing you know, you wake up with your clothes on, lying on the cool white tile of the bathroom floor, a headache the size of Jupiter with moons to match.  The victim of a careful, calculated sonic assassin.

This song does that to me every time I hear it.  Beautiful melody perfectly paired with a lyric dripping in unfettered sadness and heart-rending honesty that is honestly damn near unlistenable.  Damn near, mind you.  It reminds me of the dark sides of you and I, and also, not so contrastingly so, that movie “Closer”.  Listen loud make and sure your significant other is either asleep or not coming over.

———————————————————————————

“Are you out of love with me?

Are you longing to be free?

Do I drive you up a tree?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!

Do I drive you up the wall?

Do you dread every phone call?

Can you not stand me at all?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!

Though I need you more than air

is it true you just don’t care?

Are you having an affair?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!

When we met I thought

money was everything

so I let you buy the house,

the car, the ring

but I can’t take your perpetual whining

and you can’t sing

I though if we live apart

we could made a brand-new start

Do you want to break my heart?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!

I’ve enjoyed making you

miserable for years

found peace of mind in

playing on your fears

How I loved to catch your gold

and silver tears, but now my dear

What a dark and dreary life

Are you reaching for a knife?

Could you really kill your wife?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!

Of, I die, I die, I die!

So it’s over, you and I

Was my whole life just a lie?

Yeah! Oh, yeah!”

——————————————————————————-

ANYWAY.  On a lighter note, “You’ve Got Mail” is on TV… and I’m watching it.

Magnetic Fields.

OK Go - All Is Not Lost

OK Go - Of the Blue Colour of the Sky

Oooookay Go.

First thing’s first. If you are reading these words, don’t stop.  Whether you’re in the dark, squinting through near or far sighted eyes bathed in the white glow of whatever kind of dark framed screen, no sleep in mind no time for sleep headphones clamped around both ears, or not, thank you for being here. It feels SO good to be back again. and back again. all over again.

About those headphones… Welcome back to Saturday Night Music Club. This week, we have what previous generations would call a “DOOZY”.  Coming from one of the best bands still making records, OK Go - Of the Blue Colour of the Sky left me feeling a bit underwhelmed the first time I heard it.  I believe I just got off of an airplane and heard it on the car ride home for the first time; tired, worn and torn and just not in the fucking mood.  The next day I took the ‘ol Pontiac Bonneville out for a spin all by my lonesome and flicked on the stereo.  Third song in, this comes on. I listened to it at least 5 times in row before I realize I’d been driving on the same road without any sense of surrounding or destination for at least 15 minutes, mouth locked in a stupid ear-to-ear, kid-in-a-candy-store grin (Upon further review, it had to have been at least 13 minutes 40 seconds, if my math is right…).  What a wonderful song.  If it could make me smile on down to the depths kind of day, it may have the same effect on you.

Check it out, listen loud, let me know what you think!

I missed you guys.

I had a BAT-SHIT CRAZY dream this past Friday the 13th.  I woke up, came online and typed everything I could remember to my pal Nick, who was kind enough to email me what I wrote to him.  Swing by tomorrow, I’ll share…  Think Inception meets The Shining…  Heavy.

Jimmy Eat World - A Sunday

JEW - Clarity

Amidst a midwest blizzard, waiting in my little pocket of the Chicago suburbs for the whirlwind of snow that Al Roker Jr. promised me, an epiphany struck me this morning.  Thankful as I was that the open laptop resting on my, well, LAP didn’t slip off of me and crash onto the floor (like laptops of the past have fallen from the top bunk of a moving bus), I still awoke in a fit of panic as I stared at the empty Audio Post Update window of Tumblr.  I had once again, fallen asleep while trying to chose a song for SNMC.  On the plus side, I looked out the window at the wintry bonanza before me, and I knew what song to post for yet another Sunday Morning Music Club.

Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity remains one of my favorite albums ever, and for me, resonates louder particularly in the winter. Sitting in the artificial warmth of an idling car.  Piercing headlights fighting through sheets of white, spitting hexagonal reflections in every direction. Frosty windshield wipers struggling to cut the cold glass free from the weight of blanketing snow.  Winter always takes me back to clarity, and clarity always takes me back to winter.

Anyways, enough of my self-indulgent ramblings.  Enjoy the song.  Its still awesome when you’re sitting on the beach or basking in the Australian summer sun. (Lucky…)

!NERD ALERT!

Today is the first week of my fantasy football playoffs.  I’m semi-obsessed, so deal with it.  I’m pitted against my old friend J.R. in the first round, whom I will be heckling all the live long day via Twitter and text.  Just warning you in advance.  The Bears are also playing the Patriots today in a blizzard game at Soldier Field.  So I have two predictions to make today:

TEAM TIGHT PANTS (Yours truly) - 132

VS.

YOUR TEAM SUCKS! (@LessThanJR) - 125

Its gonna be close, but I think TTP will come out on top.

CHICAGO BEARS - 17

VS.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - 14

Blizzard Bowl. Bears win with a late miracle field goal.

DISCUSS any of the above.  Ignore the sports stuff if you must!

Wilco - Jesus, Etc.

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Okay, sooooo where was I?

Ah yes, there it is.  Like ice skating.  Maybe not as familiar as riding a bike, but FAR more fun.  The only thing about ice skating, however, is once you start, its quite difficult to stop.  In this case, I think I can let myself slide for a while.

Last weekend I played a little acoustic show in my hometown of Barrington to kick off the holidays.  It was about 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which was fine until the last couple songs during which my fingers froze to my strings, much like Ralphie’s fabled friend’s tongue froze to the lamp post. (See here: A Christmas Story).  During the first two thirds of the show though, I did manage to play a version of Wilco’s “Jesus Etc.”.

I heard this song in the past but never really listened until one night on the KISS tour.  I was hanging out with Mike in the back lounge, both of us unable to sleep, listening to song after song after song.  Then Mike put this one on, and I finally fell deeply in love with it.  Sometimes it takes a couple listens to really “get” a song, but when it ends up sinking in… Oh, how the anchor drops.  And drop, it did.

I also want to take this moment to thank everyone who came out and sang along on such short, nearly unannounced notice.  One awesome couple that I met after the show told me my sole “tweet” announcing it sounded more like a drug deal than a performance… “Behind the Christmas Tree… Next to the ice rink…  Dressed in black camo…”  Nevertheless, thank you all. It was great seeing you and playing a few songs.

Anyways, take a couple listens to this wonderful song.  See if the anchor drops for you.

Let me know what you think, and as always, DISCUSS.

Have a great weekend and enjoy.

P.S. This week’s song is dedicated to the one and only Mike Carden.  Happy fuckin’ Birthday weekend. Santi.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

The Suburbs

Internet on tour is as fleeting as sun in Seattle.

From the fantastic new Arcade Fire album, “The Suburbs”.

I’ve been a big fan of this band for quite some time, so a new record is something of a treat, particularly when it manages to evolve from the last album while maintaining great songwriting.  Love it.

Listen loud, proud, and enjoyably.

What’s your favorite song on the album, if you’re familiar?

Blur - Tender

Blur - 13

I’m sitting in the back of a moving bus, driving from a show at Jones Beach, NY with a song in my head.  A Great night should always end with a great song.

From the Blur album “13” comes one of my favorite songs of all-time.  This is the kind of song you can sing arm-in-arm with your best friends on a boys/girls night out, or hum softly to yourself alone in your bedroom, all the while maintaining its muster.  Just one of the many diamonds from a band relatively unknown in America.  Listen Loud, and Enjoy!

P.S. It’s been great seeing everyone on the tour, particular at the headlining shows.  Thank you all.  Sleep well.  (Good Morning Eastern hemisphere!)

Now accepting SNMC requests.

DISCUSS.
